The Fall of Troy- Doppleganger

With their new album In The Likely Event creeping up on us, I revisited The Fall of Troy's excellent 2005 debut Doppleganger. Less genre-bending than 2007's Manipulator, Doppleganger provides the rapid-fire notes and banshee shrieking we have come to expect from Thomas Erak. Although some songs blend into another, tracks like "Macaulay McCulkin" and "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X." stand out with their urgent pacing and frenzied instrumentation that forces your fingers into air-guitar mode. Be sure to check it out and pick up In The Likely Event when it drops on October 6th.

Video: Kevin Devine- Another Bag of Bones (Pink Couch Sessions)

Kevin Devine sat himself down on the big pink couch and performed "Another Bag of Bones", my personal favorite KD song. Audio is wack at the beginning but improves vastly by the end of the video. Regardless, Kevin sounds fantastic. Brother's Blood is still making headway on my list of top records of the year. Only thing more sweet than that would be a copy of Daisy's artwork signed by everyone in Brand New coming unexpectedly a week after your pre-order arrives...today was a good day. Video below.

I don't really get the point of releasing a trailer for a music video, but any pub for "Born and Raised" will get love from me. Still one of my favorites off the great Old Crows/Young Cardinals, and one of my top songs of the year. Just one hell of the chorus. Person L- The Positives

Ex-The Starting Line frontman Kenny Vasoli released the first song off his new band Person L's highly anticipated debut LP. I really like the direction they went with 2008's Initial. A much more introverted jam-oriented sound, and it looks like their sticking with that. Head over to their MySpace to hear the new jam and look for The Positives to drop November 17th...can you believe it's almost October already? Hello Birthday!

Ben Gibbard- These Roads Don't Move

You can catch the first track off the Jay Farrar/Ben Gibbard collaborated soundtrack to the soon-to-be-released documentary One Fast Move Or I'm Gone over at NPR. Based on Jack Kerouac's time spent at Big Sur, this first track gives off the ease of Southern California, but still the wandering nature of Kerouac's travels in Gibbard's super smooth vocals. Curious to see the film and if songs like these keep coming out, the soundtrack will be top-notch. Soundtrack drops October 20th and keep your eyes peeled for One Fast Move Or I'm Gone.

Saves The Day announce tracklisting for Daybreak

Saves The Day posted the tracklisting for their new album Daybreak today. With the album they'll finally finish their trilogy, the first two parts consisting of 2005's The End and 2007's Under The Boards. I never really bought into the concept behind it much, but as long as they keep churning out music it'll be cool by me. I'm just interested to hear them without Dave Soloway and hopefully a less whiny Chris Conley. Still stoked.

Pilot episode of FlashForward was tonight and I'm already hooked. Huge explosions, unexplainable premonitions already coming true, interwoven characters. You know I'm all about Lost so the feel of this show fits all warm and cozy with me. Plus, anyone else catch the Oceanic Airlines poster (or Seth McFarlane) in the first 20 minutes? Wale pushes back Attention Deficit, announces tour with Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco

I was looking forward to checking out hometown hero and master MC Wale's debut record Attention Deficit next week, but word's come in that the album has been pushed back to November 3. Only consolation is that the reason for the delay is a rumored tour opening for Lupe Fiasco and Jay-Z. The tour is still unconfirmed, but if it's true...tour of the year, hands down. Pelican- An Inch Above Sand/Strung Up From The Sky

Have heard lots of good stuff about Chicago-based post-metal act Pelican. Finally gave a listen to their new songs "An Inch Above Sand" and "Strung Up From The Sky" and I'm digging. The latter track will also go along way to silence the critics hating on Larry Herweg's drum skills. If the words "atmospheric" and "heaviness" go as well together in your head as they do in mine, then get at this. Both tracks are off Pelican's new record, What We All Come To Need dropping October 27.

The Smashing Pumpkins announce Teargarden by Kaleidyscope

Billy Corgan has just revealed via The Smashing Pumpkins blog that the band has begun recording for a new album titled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. The record will have 44 tracks, but no traditional release date, as the band will post completed songs sporadically until all are done. Best part is every song will be free free free.

Seems like a really cool idea and I'm liking what I'm hearing about the the direction of the album, as it supposedly "harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty." If this can come anywhere near Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, one of my favorite albums of all time, I'll be ecstatic.

According to Corgan, the first track should drop somewhere around Halloween so look out for that and hit the blog below to get all the details.

Movie Review: Open Water

The 2003 film Open Water is hands down one of the most unnerving movies I've seen in recent memory. In every essence it's a horror film. Only difference is instead of a knife-wielding dude in a goofy mask popping up and disappearing, it's real sharks. And let me emphasis...REAL SHARKS(!). Every lapping wave and fleeting shadow gets your blood flowing. And to all the critics who call this movie "slow" or "boring", try and watch the brief scene during the thunderstorm at night and tell me you don't scream a little...

Wasn't sure if anyone saw this, since no one is up on 'Ye right now. Wanted to make sure at least someone was talking about him...On the real, he's apologized and its hard to stay mad at him. Plus, isn't like he's gonna change anyways. Keep your eyes peeled for a Taylor Swift/Kanye collaboration soon, I'm calling that now.

Anyways, sick performance. Can't say anything, but that this song is fucking huge in every sense of the word.

Casey Crescenzo and the boys in The Dear Hunter posted the most all-encompassing video update of the year thus far. Apparently Casey was able to take a long enough break from making must-have records like Act III: Life and Death and phone convos with the Dalai Lama to fill us in on tour plans and show us a music video clip. Gonna have to catch them with Thrice in November if I can stop being a poor college student...video below.

Death Cab For Cutie- Meet Me on the Equinox

People at MTV are hosting a stream of "Meet Me on the Equinox",the new track Death Cab For Cutie recorded for the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack, which will include songs by Thom Yorke, Muse, and Bon Iver. Yeah, 'cause that makes sense...Anyways, featuring tumbling drums, a distorted bass line, and ringing chords, you get some hybrid of Plans and Narrow Stairs. Ben Gibbard's smooth voice floats eerily over the swelling, cooing "Let our bodies intertwine/ But always understand/ That everything ends". Don't see myself getting caught up in the Twilight hype, nor do I get why every female goes bat shit crazy over Robert Pattinson, but this is a cool track.

EPL Wrap-up: Week 4

While trying to console both my Redskins disappointing loss and my Bon Temps Mighty Ducks probably fantasy football loss, I'll hit you up with this weekend in the EPL.

-Holding onto a season already slipping away, Liverpool reminded everyone they're still around with a 4-0 walloping of Burnley. Israeli national Yossi Benayoun's hat trick did the number for the Reds.

-West Ham and Everton's disappointing starts both continued as the Hammers lost 1-0 to struggling Wigan and the Toffees fell late at Fulham 2-1 on the back of a great strike by Damien Duff.

-Aston Villa avoided a bad loss thanks to a Gabriel Agbonlahor header, sneaking past Birmingham 1-0.

-In one of the two premiere matches of the weekend, white-hot White Hart residents Tottenham looked poised to shock Manchester United after notching an lead within the match's first minute (see below for more gushing). However, a stellar free kick from Ryan Giggs, Anderson's first Premier League goal, and an obligatory Rooney score turned into another dominating victory for the Red Devils, prevailing 3-1.

-In the most interesting match up of the weekend, we saw streaking Manchester City and Emmanuel Adebayor go up against the Togo internationals former club in Arsenal. For the second week an OG gave the Gunner's opponents a lead, and despite a Robin Van Persie strike, Man City took the lead, and eventually won 4-2. Controversy struck when Adebayor scored, his fourth in four matches, and ran right to the Arsenal faithful inciting some rioting and a yellow card. Curious to see the fall out.

Goal of the Week:
I feel like I keep giving these out in losing efforts, but Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe's bicycle kick in the 1st minute (yeah you read that right) against Manchester United was jaw dropping. Despite the 3-1 loss, Defoe has been something special for Tottenham.

Since Colbert Report has been on a break, I haven't been able to fall asleep as soundly without the soothing caress of Stephen Colbert's voice. With new episodes starting tomorrow night, I figured it gotta give the man an e-Colbert bump on here. The latest issue of Rolling Stone published a Q&A with Colbert that, interestingly enough, nixed the laugh track. Rather than setting him up with jokes, the article delves more into Stephen Colbert: the man (a devout Catholic who lost his father and two brothers in a plane crash when he was 10) and less about Stephen Colbert: the character. Don't know how I missed that Brother Ali dropped the first single off his upcoming record Us. On "Fresh Air", The Brother continues to drop the one-of-a-kind knowledge he served up so warm and tasty on 2007's The Undisputed Truth over a soul-funk beat. He was also kind enough to give us all some in-depth details on what to expect from the new full-length, most notably a new story-telling approach he's taken in his writing. The amount of effort I'm putting in to not download the leak of Daisy is monumental. Any Brand New news keeps the shakes, sweats, and other crackheadian (yup, went there) symptoms away is dope. After some telepathic chatting with the group, I was able to pry this excellent version of "Sowing Season", the most constantly re-imagined song in their back catalog, onto the internet...and god damn does Jesse make it look effortless. Studio Update: Circa Survive (Pt. 5: Sequence 15v3)

Seems like Anthony and Co. are taking over my blog a bit. Final studio update from Circa Survive released today. First half is all drum tracking and second half is all bloopers, most notably the new speed metal band Blackeye Butch Killer. So funny and great to hear Anthony still shredding his vocals with those screams. I really loved this series so it's sad to see them go. Kid Cudi- Pursuit of Happiness (feat. MGMT)

Get our first refreshing tune coming off Kid Cudi's debut record Man on the Moon: The End of Days. Ratatat brings the spacey production we expect from Kid Cudi and MGMT's subdued, but still psychedelic vocals add a little something something to the chill track. Saw some hate for this song, but caught an excellent review somewhere out there in the interwebz of the new album so only time will tell. Muse- Undisclosed Desires

British epic-rockers (is that a term?) Muse have released another song from their upcoming album, The Resistance. Mixing plucking strings and deep bass-thumping beats, Matthew Bellamy and Co. sound way more moody (think The Cure of Depeche Mode) on "Undisclosed Desire" compared to their usual bombastic sound. Whatever...as long as Bellamy continues to rock a keytar when they play this live, I'm cool with it. Link below and pick up The Resistance when it comes out September 15th.

Video: Brian Fallon- Casanova, Baby! (acoustic)

Not exactly one of my favorite Gaslight Anthem songs, but Brian Fallon gives it a good acoustic treatment. Always cool to get a little insight into the song and the subtle touch of bashfulness he adds to the track is golden. Seems like one of the most genuine guys in music..god damn I need to see them live. Video below

Radiohead- These Are My Twisted Words

Any new Radiohead is good Radiohead as far as I'm concerned. "These Are My Twisted Words" debuted a couple weeks back. Still maintaining the same sound they layed down on 2007's amazing In Rainbows. The build up in the song is fantastic if even we aren't treated to Thom Yorke's dream-inducing cries until 2:38 into the track. Closure In Moscow- A Night At The Spleen

Since they released the music video for "Sweet#hart" earlier this week, I've been on a real Closure In Moscow kick. Revisiting First Temple, I definitely consider it one of the best records I've heard all year, and one of the best debuts I've heard in a long time.

I'm looking at "A Night At The Spleen" to talk to ya'll for me. Goes from a jazzy smoothness to dance-floor poppy, before dipping into a crunching heaviness. For God sakes they sometimes do it all at once. Just a different sounding song that keeps you on your toes and executes on some really daring moves. Yeah, yeah yeah, "they sound just like The Mars Volta"...I'm digging though.

Drake- Fear

Been a Drake kind of week and he just dropped us a new song. An introspective, yet appreciative Drizzy gives "Fear" his always smooth treatment. Funky beat with some nice horns...do I hear "slow jam". Hard to say when Drake always goes that hard. So Far Gone EP drops September 15th.
